European Blackjack

European Blackjack is quite similar to the original blackjack game. It is one of the most well known blackjack variations. The rules of European Blackjack are quite easy to remember and the strategies are also quite basic and uncomplicated.

In European Blackjack, the objective of the game is the same as blackjack, achieving a total which is higher than that of the dealer, without exceeding the total of 21.

Rules of European Blackjack

  • The game is played with two 52 card standard deck.
  • The blackjack would beat every other hand.
  • All the face cards would have the value of ten.
  • The aces would have the value of 1 or 11.
  • The player can draw up to nine cards in order to make a hand of 11 cards.
  • The dealer will stand on all the hands except for the hands with 17 value.
  • Exceeding the total of 21 will mean bust and the player would lose.
  • Blackjacks are paid at 3 to 2.
  • When the hands of the dealer and the player tie, it is a push.
  • Dealers and player's blackjack would also tie.
  • If the starting card is an ace, the hand can be insured.

How is European Blackjack played?

Every player would first be dealt two faced up cards. The dealer would only be dealt one face up card. There is a no peek rule in the game which means that the dealer cannot check the cards to see if there is a blackjack until the second card is dealt. For this reason, any additional bets made by the player would be lost in case the dealer has a blackjack. Also, the dealer would only be able to get blackjack on the hand if the first card is an ace or a card with a value of ten.

Depending on the up card dealt to the dealer, the dealer would offer various options to the player as given below:

Early surrender

If the up card of the dealer is not an ace, the players are offered surrender. On accepting it, half of the original bet is lost.

Insurance

When the up card is an ace, the player would be offered the insurance. By taking the insurance, the player would have to make another bet that the dealer has a blackjack. In this case, the player would lose the original bet would be paid 2 to 1 on the insurance. If the dealer does not have a blackjack, the bet would be lost. After the insurance is selected, the hand is completed.

Even money

If the dealer has an ace as an up card and the player also has a blackjack, the player would be offered even money. The player can take even money if he/she believes that the dealer also has a blackjack. When the even money is taken, the payout is 1:1 by doubling the chip amount of the player in the bet circle. These were the basic rules of European Blackjack.
