Blackjack Dealer Rules: Variations of Dealer's Play

Blackjack today is among the most popular card games in the world along with poker. Both of these games are highly popular with the players and there are several different variations which are offered by the casinos in terms of the rules of the standard games as well as the entire structure of the game. Every casino has different rules variations when it comes to blackjack; blackjack dealer rules are also different though they differ not much. Because it is among the most well known table games, players are always looking for more in order to enjoy themselves.

Blackjack is not a very difficult game to learn though it does require a lot of concentration, a keen eye, nerves and of course some luck. In the Nevada casinos, the game is often called just 21 and it is mainly a banking game. No matter what the variations in the game would be, the objective would always remain the same, reaching a total which is higher than that of the dealer without exceeding 21. There are several different versions of blackjack available today on the internet as well as in land based casinos. All of these games have different names like Crazy Eights in Britain, Pontoon in Australia and several more. All of these games also have different rules.

Casino rule variations

In casinos, the players will always come across many different rule variations which will have an effect on the house advantage. There are a few rules which are determined by the local regulations or law and the others are decided by the casino itself. However, not all of these rules would be known to the players so for players the best thing to do is to just ask for them before playing. In all, more than 100 different variations exist in terms of casino rules.

Given below are a few variations found in casinos about blackjack dealer rules:

Standing on hard 17

This is the most common and classic rule of blackjack found in most casinos. According to this rule, the dealer would always have to stand once the score reaches a total of 17 without an ace. Actually, this is not really a variation since the rule is almost always applicable in all casinos.

Standing on soft 17

Another rule which changes in every casino is about the dealer standing if he/she has a total of 17 with an ace in hand. For a player, this rule is not very favorable since there would be lesser chances of the dealer busting. Also, the rules regarding soft 17 tend to change for every casino.

Hitting on soft 17

Hitting on soft 17 is not very widely used in casinos but some do offer this option. Blackjack switch is one game where the dealer almost always has to hit on a soft 17. According to this rule, when the dealer reaches a total of 17 without an ace, the dealer will have to hit. This particular rule would increase the edge of the house by 0.2%. However, this would depend on the type of variation which is played.
